I watched the Sound of Music again last night. I had forgotten how grumpily charming the Captain was and how the late 1930′s styles morphed with 1960′s styles for the costumes. But it is a beautiful film. After watching it, I want to go to Austria and dance in a gazebo.
I find the Baroness in the movie fascinating. She is beautiful and slightly scheming, but she is gracious in defeat. As I watch Eleanor Parker’s performance, I can’t help but feel a little sorry for her. She’s not right for the Captain, but we also know that she probably won’t find anyone better.
And yes, I thought Richard Armitage could play Captain Von Trapp. After The Hobbit, we know he can sing. Hmmm.
I’ve always admired Eleanor Parker’s portrayal of the Baronness. She is amazingly beautiful to watch. I too felt sorry for her but was glad she didn’t stand in the way of true romance.
I’d like to watch her in more movies.
I agree. She isn’t a character you love to hate. She’s a character you hate to hate. I prefer to think she does find her dream guy, maybe 30 years later while shopping in New York, and lives happily ever after.
Nice thought. I worry about whether her fortune survives the Nazis, though.
True. But she was all kinds of stylish. Started designing raincoats in London, opened shops in Paris and New York. Like that. Too ridiculous? You are probably right.
YOU READ MY MIND!! The gazebo scene gets me every single time. I consider to be (possibly?) THE sexiest movie scene and love story. Ever. Hands down. I’ve always wondered if could have been as gracious as the Baroness. Yeah, she was a little hoity toity but beautiful, well-dressed and obviously, well-bred!!
And right after I start breathing again at the end of North and South, I thought Captain Von Trapp=Richard Armitage. The Julie Andrews of today??? No idea. Oh yeah. ME! I could do that. Sort of?
Forgot to mention…there are 2 movies that I watch over and over…N&S and TSofM….and everytime, without fail, hubs will waltz thru and exclaim, “ARE YOU WATCHING THAT AGAIN?!!!” I say that right after RA makes the Richard III movie, we campaign for a remake of TSofM starring…….
I tend to watch or rewatch movies when I’m doing dishes and laundry and other housework — and anyone that complains gets to work, too.
Fortunately dh likes Pride and Prejudice –at least Mr. Collins.
